Origin of Bedouin Tea

Our wonderfully refreshing and healing Bedouin Tea is made from the traditional bedouin herb Habek/Habaq (Mentha longifolia) which is native to northeastern Africa. An ancient herb, it is also mentioned in the Bible as a currency, hence why it is also known as Bible Mint. Traditionally used to treat colds and flu, aid digestion and ease a sore throat or soothe an upset stomach, along with its ability to produce perspiration and thus cool the body, it has served the Bedouin tribes well for eons of generations. In the modern era many of these pharmacological activities and  therapeutic indications have now been confirmed by studies, and further health benefits identified.

Rich in Vitamins A, B, C, and K, beta carotene, and essential minerals such as sodium, calcium, phosphorous, zinc, potassium, iron, manganese and magnesium, Habek also contains high amounts of volatile oils, in particular epoxy pulegone, flavonoids, phenolic acids (including two star components of thymol and carvacrol), cinnamates, ceramides, sesquiterpenes, terpenes, and terpenoids.  It has antibacterial, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic, anti-catarrhal, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, antirheumatic, diuretic, stimulating and carminative properties, which can assist with the treatment and/or prevention of various diseases. Regularly drinking of this tea will also act as a tonic for the entire body, promoting good health and wellness.

Soothes Upset Stomach & Improves Digestion

Habek Tea is an excellent choice before or after a meal. It acts as a great appetizer as its aroma stimulates salivary glands to secrete digestive enzymes, thus facilitating digestion.  After or during a meal, it is a great palate cleanser. An excellent germicide and antiseptic, it acts well for gastrointestinal complaints, dealing with the root cause of the problem. Studies have shown that two compounds contained in habek, thymol and carvacrol, are an awesome bacteria fighter, with an effectiveness against antibiotic resistant strains including e. Coli and salmonella. In the case of an upset stomach, cramps are relieved by calming the contracting muscles, and circulation is improved to relieve inflammation, also relieving symptoms such as gas, bloating and indigestion. Also works well for calming colic, reducing both the spasms and associated pain. An excellent aid for IBS sufferers, it will help to keep the digestive system running smoothly. Nausea is kept at bay by the antispasmodic properties which prevent the stomach muscles from contracting. A natural remedy for preventing sickness after surgery or chemotherapy and to inhibit motion sickness.

Combats the Common Cold, Flu & Allergies

The antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties help to fight clogged sinuses and loosen bronchial restriction due to the common cold, viral infections and allergies.  Steam from the tea is also a strategic weapon for the sinuses, improving the flow of air within the nasal cavity. Antispasmodic and a muscle relaxant, it also soothes a sore throat and irritating cough. Antioxidants allow the white blood cells to travel through the body quicker to fight infection, and essential vitamins and nutrients boost the immune system.  Habek also has properties to cause perspiration, thus relieving heat and body temperature, which may be beneficial for a cold or fever. In this case a stronger brew is recommended. Studies have shown that thymol and carvacrol contained within habek is effective against Staphylococcus aureus which can cause severe respiratory diseases in both the upper and lower respiratory tract, as well as the ears, nose and throat. Seasonal allergies will benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties, whilst properties within the tea will also prohibit the release of certain chemicals which can aggravate severe nasal symptoms, plus provide relief from an itchy throat, thus relieving symptoms of hay fever. Asthma sufferers will benefit from the relaxant properties, bringing relief from congestion and bronchial restriction.

Detoxify & Protect the Body & Weight Loss

Habek contains proven high levels of antioxidants, together with the anti-inflammatory properties, to help rid the body of harmful free radicals, protecting against protein, DNA and lipid damage, and helping to protect the body against oxidative stress and certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer and a weakened immune system. Meanwhile the vitamins and nutrients within the tea will boost the body’s natural immune system. As a natural diuretic, this tea can flush toxins from the body, cleansing, purifying and stimulating the kidneys and liver. Nutrients within habek also help to purify and cleanse the blood, whilst potassium can help to reduce blood pressure. Antibiotic, antimicrobial and antiviral properties, reduce and protect against viral and bacterial diseases, even protecting against aggressive, antibiotic-resistant strains such as Staphylococcus aureus which can wreak havoc on almost any part of the body. It can also protect against candida overgrowth internally with just regular drinking of the tea.

For weight loss, Habek can help by stimulating the digestive enzymes, digesting and absorbing the nutrients properly, boosting the metabolism and ensuring that fat is being used correctly and not stored, systematically aiding weight loss. The diuretic property further ensures that excess fluid is not stored, and proper digestion promotes the elimination of gas and bloating.

Nervous System

Adaptogenic properties found in habek will boost the body’s resilience to stress, regulate cortisol levels and release a small amount of serotonin in the brain to beat depression and promote wellbeing and relaxation, effectively relieving mental stress and anxiety. It may also reduce blood pressure and body temperature, further enhancing relaxation. Additionally, the rejuvenating flavour and aroma will stimulate the limbic system, boosting mental alertness, concentration, retention and memory.

A Natural Painkiller

A natural vasodilator, habek tea can help combat headaches caused by tension or tiredness by relaxing tense muscles and relieving pain. Also great for menstrual pain as it may reduce the intensity and length of muscle contractions. Its antinociceptive property makes this tea ideal for rheumatoid arthritis pain, blocking or reducing the pain receptors. Further help for this condition can also be found by making a poultice from the leaves and applying to the arthritic joints to promote blood flow to the affected area and reduce swelling.

Oral Health

The antibacterial properties will inhibit germs in the mouth which cause bad breath and plaque, and gum diseases such as gingivitis.  The fresh flavour and aroma will neutralise any odours from smelly foods consumed.
