Origin of Lemongrass

Our tea is made from Egyptian Lemongrass (Cymbopogon Citratus), also known as Citronella. Ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans used it to make cosmetics whilst also utilising it as a para herb since its health benefits to the body and skin were well known even then. It has a history of use through several cultures throughout the world, traditionally used to combat fever and as a digestive aid. Lemongrass is also reputed to be the lemony scented oil in the Bible,  referred to as calamus oil.  It was believed to cleanse the spirit and was used to offset negative energy and combat bad luck.

Lemongrass Tea with its citrusy aroma and hint of sweet lemon taste, is refreshingly healthy and promotes clear thinking, reduces stress and is a mood booster. It contains vitamins A, B1 (Thiamine), B2 (Riboflavin), B3 (Niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (Folate), C, plus manganese, iron, potassium , phosphorus, iron, magnesium, zinc, calcium, selenium, flavonoids, essential oils and phenolic compounds. With antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-dyspeptic, antispasmodic, analgesic, antinociception, antipyretic, tranquillizer, anti-obesity, anti-nociceptive, anti-diarrheal, anti-hermetic and diuretic properties it has immense health benefits.

Detoxify, Boost & Protect the Body

Lemongrass contains high levels of antioxidants, together with anti-inflammatory properties, to help rid the body of harmful free radicals, protecting against protein, DNA and lipid damage, and helping to protect the body against oxidative stress and certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and a weakened immune system. Meanwhile the vitamins and nutrients within the tea will boost the body’s natural immune system, preparing the body to fight common infections, viruses and afflictions.

As a natural diuretic, this tea can flush toxins from the body, cleansing, purifying and stimulating the kidneys and liver.

Lab tests on animals conducted by The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center shows that lemongrass inhibits the growth of cancers, which is believed to be due to the citral, geranial, and chlorogenic acid which it contains.

It is known to have been recommended by oncologists as an adjuvant aid during chemotherapy or radiation treatment to help suppress the formation of a secondary tumour.

Lemongrass is extremely good for increasing the functioning of the cardiovascular system. Tests have shown that it can moderately reduce blood pressure, and significantly slow the heart rate, thereby reducing undue strain on the heart.

Further protection is afforded by reducing the accumulation of cholesterol within the blood vessels and preventing hardening of the arteries. Anti-inflammatory properties can also reduce inflammation in the arteries and veins, thus allowing blood to travel easier, lowering the risk of a platelet build up and subsequent clot within the blood vessel. Antioxidants, in particular isoorientin, chlorogenic acid and swertiajaponin may help to prevent the dysfunction of cells inside the coronary arteries.

Researchers showed that drinking Lemongrass Tea daily can increase the red blood cell count,  hemoglobin concentration and packed cell volume in the blood and prevent anaemia. Improving blood flow is a plus for the entire body, inside and out as it also improves the skin and hair.

By inducing sweating and acting as a diuretic, Lemongrass helps to remove toxins and excess fluid and sodium from the body, keeping the kidneys healthy and reducing fat content in the body. According to one small study, Lemongrass Tea increased urine more than any other beverage.

Antibiotic, antimicrobial and antiviral properties help to reduce and protect against viral and bacterial diseases, and are great for oral health, helping to  protect against gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis and eliminating bad breath.

It was also shown to be highly effective against streptococcus mutants bacteria, which is the bacteria responsible for most tooth decay.

An excellent choice of beverage after a meal to sweeten the breath after pungent food.  The tea is also known to reduce the occurrence of fungal infections such as thrush. Furthermore, Its antinociceptive property also makes it ideal for rheumatoid arthritis pain, or any joint or muscle injury by blocking or reducing the pain receptors, while its anti-inflammatory properties help to reduce swelling.

Combats the Common Cold, Flu & Allergies

Antiviral and antibacterial, this tea is a perfect beverage for those suffering from chest and sinus congestion and inflammation through cold, flu, bronchitis or asthma.

It is also believed to be effective against staphylococci bacteria, more commonly known as strep throat.  Lemongrass works as an expectorant, thereby loosening mucus in the throat and respiratory system and allowing it to be dispelled, whilst also reducing pain. Muscle relaxant and anti-inflammatory properties will relax the trachea, protecting against a cough and irritated throat.

Lemongrass can also reduce fever which may be beneficial for a cold or virus. Steam from the tea is also a strategic weapon for the sinuses, improving the flow of air within the nasal cavity.

Antioxidants allow the white blood cells to travel through the body quicker to fight infection, whilst essential vitamins and nutrients boost the immune system.

Meanwhile seasonal allergies will benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties and find relief for nasal problems and an itchy throat, thus relieving symptoms of hay fever.

Asthma sufferers will benefit from the relaxant properties, bringing relief from congestion and bronchial restriction.

Healthy Digestion

Historically Lemongrass Tea has been used to treat stomach issues.

Drinking before or after a meal will help to boost a more efficient digestion, increasing the gastric mucus and eliminating gastric irritation, gas, acid-reflux and bloating.

Anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cooling properties will help to calm the digestive tract in the case of diarrhoea or cramps, alleviating spasms and pain, plus eliminating any harmful bacteria.

Lemongrass is also anti-hermetic, meaning that it is effective at reducing vomiting and nausea.

Properties within the tea also increase gastric mucus, resulting in further protection to the lining of the stomach, therefore preventing its erosion from the digestive acids, lowering the risk of stomach ulcers developing, and giving existing ulcers the opportunity to heal.

For Women

Its stomach soothing, muscle relaxant and analgesic properties make this tea perfect for reducing the effects of PMS. As a diuretic It can also tackle bloating and water retention often associated with menstruation. Menopausal women may find relief from hot flashes, as it has properties which help to cool the entire body. Plus it will help to eliminate mood swings.

Weight Loss and Control

Lemongrass can give you more energy, increase your metabolism and thus help the body to burn more fat. It will also make you feel fuller, thus reducing hunger pangs.   A study published in 2013 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition stated that polyphenols within Lemongrass enhance the oxidation of fatty acids in the body.  It also aids digestion to ensure that more nutrients are absorbed from the food, waste is dispelled from the body quicker, and as a natural diuretic it will eliminate excess fluid. A perfect low-calorie and refreshing beverage to add to a weight-loss regime.
