Origin of Marjoram

The basis for our tea is the herb Marjoram (Origanum), a herb deciduous to North Africa and Southwest Asia. It was first cultivated by the Ancient Egyptians over 3,000 years ago, for its therapeutic and healing properties, and was one of the plants that priests were instructed to use for migraines and instability, in addition to being a remedy for shock and grief. Marjoram was dedicated to Osiris, God of the Underworld, and was included in the embalming process, as well as being a funeral flower. It was also popular for its culinary use. In Ancient Greece and Rome marjoram tea was seen as a symbol of happiness. Furthermore the herb was utilised as a herbal remedy by the Greek physician, Hippocrates, known as the “father of medicine”. One of its recommended uses was for being added to boiling water and inhaled as treatment for the respiratory tract.

Marjoram contains vitamins A, B6 (pyridoxine), B9 (folate) and K, high levels of vitamin C, beta-carotene, lutein, cryptoxanthin, and zeaxanthin plus minerals such as iron, potassium, calcium, manganese, zinc, copper and magnesium, in addition to important chemical constituents such as eugenol sabinene, linalool, alpha-terpinene, thymol, terpinolene, terpinen-4-ol, linalyl acetate, cis-sabinene hydrate and terpineol. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antiseptic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, analgesic, diaphoretic, expectorant, fungicidal, carminative, laxative, nervine, sedative, diuretic, hypotensive, vasodilator, cephalic, cordial, stomachic and emmenagogue properties.  This refreshing tea is a nerve tonic and will leave you rejuvenated and relaxed, relieving mental pressure and stress, as you sit back and reap its immense health benefits.

Detoxify, Boost and Protect the Body

Marjoram contains high levels of antioxidants, together with anti-inflammatory properties, to help rid the body of harmful free radicals, protecting against protein, DNA and lipid damage, and helping to protect the body against oxidative stress and certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and a weakened immune system. Meanwhile the vitamins and nutrients within the tea will boost the body’s natural immune system, preparing the body to fight common infections, viruses and afflictions. As a natural diuretic, this tea can flush toxins from the body, cleansing, purifying and stimulating the kidneys and liver. Marjoram is extremely good for increasing the functioning of the cardiovascular system. As a natural vasodilator it will help to widen and relax the blood vessels, reducing blood pressure and undue strain on the heart. Further protection is afforded by reducing the accumulation of cholesterol within the blood vessels and preventing hardening of the arteries. It is recommended to drink marjoram tea after a heart attack and to help with the treatment of cardio-vascular disease. By inducing sweating and acting as a diuretic, Marjoram helps to remove toxins and excess fluid and sodium from the body, keeping the kidneys healthy and reducing fat content in the body. Antibiotic, antimicrobial and antiviral properties help to reduce and protect against viral and bacterial diseases, even being effective against aggressive, antibiotic-resistant strains such as Staphylococcus aureus which can wreak havoc on almost any part of the body. It can also protect against candida overgrowth internally with just regular drinking of the tea. Possessing a high amount of Vitamin K, Marjoram Tea can help promote bone mass, assisting in the prevention of bone disorders such as osteoporosis. It is also good for Alzheimer’s disease, having anti-inflammatory properties and also the ability to prevent nerve damage.

A Natural Painkiller

A natural vasodilator, marjoram tea can help combat headaches caused by tension or tiredness by relaxing tense muscles and relieving pain. Also great for menstrual pain as it may reduce the intensity and length of muscle contractions.

Combats the Common Cold, Flu & Allergies

The antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties help to fight clogged sinuses due to the common cold, viral infections and allergies. Steam from the tea is also a strategic weapon for the sinuses, improving the flow of air within the nasal cavity. Antispasmodic and a muscle relaxant, it also soothes a sore throat and irritating cough, whilst as a natural decongestant it will help to clear excess mucus and phlegm from the  throat, sinuses and respiratory tract. It will also relieve the associated headache. Antioxidants allow the white blood cells to travel through the body quicker to fight infection, and essential vitamins and nutrients boost the immune system.  Seasonal allergies will benefit from the anti-inflammatory properties, relieving symptoms of hay fever and asthma.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Sustained inflammation can be linked to chronic health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory problems, arthritis, obesity, stroke and cancer. A compound within Marjoram called Eugenol acts against cyclooxygenase, an enzyme responsible for inflammation, which can help to relieve and control symptoms. Therefore, adding this tea to the daily diet can be extremely beneficial to those suffering from diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, and inflammatory bowel conditions.

May have antimicrobial activity

Additionally, marjoram is an excellent remedy against yeasts and fungal infections. It is purported to inhibit pathogens such as E-coli, staphylococcus, shigella, plus proteus and pseudomonas. Marjoram tea can also help protect against gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis and will eliminate bad breath. An excellent choice of beverage after a meal to sweeten the breath after pungent food.

Alleviates Digestive Issues

Marjoram Tea is an excellent choice before or after a meal. It acts as a great appetizer as its aroma stimulates the salivary glands to secrete digestive enzymes, thus facilitating digestion. After or during a meal, it is a great palate cleanser. An excellent germicide and antiseptic, it acts well for gastrointestinal complaints, dealing with the root cause of the problem. Studies have shown that marjoram is effective against clostridium perfringens which is a common foodborne pathogen, in addition to an effectiveness against antibiotic resistant strains including E. coli and salmonella. In the case of an upset stomach, cramps are relieved by calming the contracting muscles, and circulation is improved to relieve inflammation, simultaneously relieving symptoms such as gas, bloating and indigestion. Also works well for calming colic, reducing both the spasms and associated pain. An excellent aid for IBS sufferers, it will help to keep the digestive system running smoothly. Nausea is kept at bay by the antispasmodic properties which prevent the stomach muscles from contracting. A natural remedy for preventing sickness after surgery or chemotherapy and to inhibit motion sickness.

Regulates the Menstrual Cycle and Hormones

Marjoram tea may help to restore the hormone balance and regulate the menstrual cycle. Studies suggest it to be helpful in the treatment of polycystic ovary syndrome. It can also reduce PMS symptoms, and with its muscle relaxant and antispasmodic properties can relieve menstrual cramps and also act as a natural painkiller. Similarly it can also help to provide relief against the symptoms of the menopause such as hot flashes, bone density loss, osteoporosis, dry skin and fatigue.
