Origin of Tamarind

Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) is actually indigenous to Africa, despite the fact that its name originates from the Persian word tamar-I-hind which translates to “Indian date”.  The fruit was well known to Ancient Egyptians, and has been used since Ancient times for both its sweet-sour flavour and multiple health benefits. It is listed in the Ebers Papyrus for its use as a laxative, and has traditionally been used as a tonic, relief for constipation, fever, peptic ulcers as well as other alleged ‘cures’ including snakebite. Extremely refreshing, this drink is a favourite during Ramadan and helps to prevent indigestion.

Our tea is sourced from the fruit of the tamarind tree, and contains vitamins A, B2 (riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (niacin), B5 (pantothenic acid), B6 (pyridoxine), C and K plus magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, niacin, Phosphorus, folate, copper and selenium, in addition to several pyrazines and thiazoles and extremely rich in polyphenols. It has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antidiabetic, anti-hypertensive,  anti-fungal, antiviral and antibacterial activity, anti-atherosclerotic, diuretic, carminative and laxative properties which add up to some pretty amazing health benefits.

Antioxidant

Antioxidants, together with the anti-inflammatory properties, can assist in ridding the body of harmful free radicals, helping to protect the body against oxidative stress, ageing and certain chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders, cancer, ageing and a weakened immune system. Being extremely rich in flavonoids and polyphenols, this tea will help to stabilise cholesterol levels. It can also reduce diastolic blood pressure, and reduce the risk of atherosclerosis, so a great boost for cardiovascular health. Tamarind is a natural remedy for diabetes since it inhibits the enzyme that prevents carbohydrate absorption and can help to control type-2 diabetes as confirmed by scientists. Selenium, along with vitamin E, will protect the lipid content in liver cells from free radical attack, thereby ensuring a healthy liver. It will also help to reduce liver toxicity induced by alcohol and fatty liver conditions. Test results showed that tamarind tea also reduced liver oxidative stress caused by chronic inflammation in the body.

Improves Nerve Function

Tamarind contains B-complex vitamins such as thiamine which are key to improving nerve function and maintaining strong reflexes. Meanwhile studies done by Monash University have further revealed that another compound found in tamarind, called xyloglucan, could help the growth of damaged brain and spinal cells by effectively building a supporting scaffold to allow healthy cells to migrate and reattach to the nervous system. Furthermore, it also improves muscle development.

Anti-inflammatory

Tamarind Tea is an excellent anti-inflammatory drink to reduce the risk and also manage the symptoms of diseases such as arthritis. Sustained inflammation can be linked to chronic health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, respiratory problems, arthritis, obesity, stroke and cancer.

Aids Digestion

Traditionally used as a laxative, Tamarind Tea contains high levels of malic and tartaric acids, plus potassium bitartrate which is effective for treating irregular bowel movements. It also promotes bile activity thus speeding up digestion and preventing bloating, gas and cramps. Its mild diuretic properties will further boost the digestive system.

Can Kill Bacteria, Viruses and Fungi

Tamarind is well known for its importance in the fight against malaria, but it can also help to protect against other conditions caused by bacteria, viruses and fungi such as E-coli, salmonella, Klebsiella pneumonia and  aspergillus niger.

 Helps with Weight Loss

For those looking to control or maintain a healthy weight, Tamarind Tea is a great choice in many aspects.  Most importantly, it contains hydroxy citric acid which has the ability to reduce the activity of fatty acid synthase, the enzyme responsible for forming adipose tissue in the body. Tamarind also increases serotonin, the hormone which impacts the entire body, stabilising the mood, controlling the appetite and helping the body decide whether to burn or store fat, thus regulating lipid metabolism. Additionally, as a mild diuretic and digestive stimulant, it can help to flush the toxins from the body, speed up digestion, and also alleviate excess fluid, gas and bloating.  Compounds within the tea also help to suppress hunger pains, keeping you fuller for longer and preventing overeating. With blood sugar and cholesterol levels also stabilised, Tamarind tea is a sure winner for weight loss or control.

Preparation of Tamarind tea
Dried tamarind (150 g per 2 liters) pour boiled water and leave to infuse for 3-4 hours, then you should boil the drink for 1-2 minutes, cool, then strain. Strain twice to separate the tea from the small remnants of tamarind. Sweeten with honey or sugar as desired

Caution
Not recommended to be taken with ibuprofen due to possible increased absorption, or any person taking aspirin or blood thinners, or suffering from gallstones or GERD.
