Its first mention had been found in the book of Isaiah in the Old Testament, where it was called “Ketza”. It is a spice used for bread and cake, which can be used in many ways. Easton’s Bible Dictionary clarifies that the Hebrew word for natural black cumin oil “Ketsah” , refers to Nigella Sativa.

Historical facts about Black Seed Oil

Since over than 3000 years ago, natural black seed oil was widely used as a herbal remedy and as a food’s spice for thousands of years. It has lots of names and the most commonly used is black cumin or black seed.


Natural black cumin oil was found as an ingredient in Tutankhamen’s tomb, indicated as a part of the carefully buried items to assist the king on his journey to the afterlife 


Black seeds oil also has been used by Cleopatra for a multiple uses.


There are five different ِAmerican’s patents for cosmetics containing Nigella Sativa, and there is a British patent for asthma therapy that includes Nigella Sativa. Also the use of black cumin’s oil in the preparation of the treatment of life-threatening diseases such as cancer and diabetes is currently being researched.



What is black seed?

Black seed is a plant whose seeds are used for treatment purposes. In the past, black cumin was being used for headache, toothache, stuffy nose and intestinal worms. It has also been used for eye redness (conjunctivitis), infection of foci (abscesses) and parasites.

Nowadays, black seed is also used to treat diseases of the digestive tract including colic, diarrhea, dysentery, constipation, and hemorrhoids. It is also used for respiratory diseases such as asthma, allergies, cough, bronchitis, emphysema, as well as flu and swine flu.

Other uses include lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol, treating cancer and strengthening the immune system.

 Women use black Cumin for birth control, stimulate menstruation and increase milk flow.

 Black cumin is sometimes used in combination with cytokine, vitamin E and saffron to relieve the side effects of a chemotherapy called cisplatin.

Researchers have shown that taking black seed reduces cough, improves breathing and lung functions in people with asthma, even if the black cumin is lower in its effectiveness than the theophylline or salbutamol drugs.

  • Hay fever (allergic rhinitis)

Regularly taking a product containing of black cumin oil, vitamin E, beta carotene and biotin daily reduces the allergy symptoms in people with hay fever.

  • Itchy and inflamed skin (eczema).

Daily intake of a specific product containing on black seeds’ oil, vitamin E, beta-carotene and biotin significantly improves symptoms of itchy and inflamed skin.   

  • Epilepsy seizures

Studies showed that taking black cumin oil every four hours for four weeks can reduce the number of seizures in children with epilepsy.

  • High blood pressure.

According to the studies, some people mentioned about a remarkable improvement in blood pressure when taking black seed twice per day for 8 weeks. 

  • Metabolic syndrome.

Taking a specific black cumin’s oil’s product twice daily for 6 weeks showed that the total cholesterol ( LDL ), and the blood sugar levels at people with metabolic syndrome can be lowered.

  • Sore throat and swollen tonsils (tonsillopharyngitis).

Researches had shown that ingesting black cumin eases the pain of sore throat and swollen tonsils.
